A Report On The Night - 1335 Words

Everyone sleeps at certain times. Chicago’s imminent seeming glow from the lights is starting to flicker and dim. Windows turn off, second by second. The window cleaning personnel raise themselves up on their scaffolds to start their nightly work; cleaning each window of Willis Tower, home of the Skydeck. An ABC News helicopter flies by with four passengers aboard. I am one of those passengers - a news reporter, reporting a standstill traffic jam. To imagine myself as just a maraca shaped dot in the sky is above my, so to say, â€Å"Imagination limit.† â€Å"Three, two, one, on air.† The televisor hands me the script and works with his filming duties. . . My alarm surprises me. I groan and ease myself up from my uncovered mattress on my top†¦show more content†¦I was excited - I got my internet back after two weeks of doing enormous amounts of work on the laptops at school; and they were not easy to type on. It was not much of a surprise that I would thi nk of that first. I do play my games every day, but I got cold, so I went to get some hot cocoa from the kitchen. I walked to the kitchen, and saw a bowl with buttered popcorn filled halfway to the top. I picked up a hot chocolate mix packet labeled â€Å"Swiss Miss - Open here.† I ripped it open and some coffee brown dust flew out of the top. I grabbed a mug and poured all of the contents in the mug. I set the microwave for one minute and thirty seconds. I didn’t think even how much time I set the microwave to because I dashed from my laptop. Once I logged onto my computer, I smelled a heavy stench of smoke, and it was not by a cigarette being lit. I rushed back to the kitchen and there was the microwave, but I could not see it. Flames engulfed the microwave in mere seconds. I tried to cease the flame with water but it didn’t touch it. Time froze at that single moment, and so did my mind. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t even move. The water fell beside the fire, not even inching toward it. I woke up my mom as soon as possible and tried to get out everyone else but I was trapped. I was cornered and my only way is no possible way. I was staring off into space. The constant, obnoxious beeping of the microwave rung in my head like a

Annotated Bibliography On Mobile Development Essay

Overview of Mobile Development in Africa 1. What are some of the advantages of mobile devices that help residents of sub-Saharan Africa to better receive information and facilitate communication? There are several advantages of mobile devices that help residents of sub-Saharan Africa to better receive information and facilitate communication. With the low-cost, rapid adoption of mobile phones, search costs to visit markets to compare prices and products have decreased dramatically. Residents can call markets or friends to obtain information about said prices and products immediately, instead of waiting for information via radio broadcast or conducting a person visit – which can be both time and cost intensive. In this way, they are also becoming active (instead of passive) participants in knowledge accumulation and transfer, as they can retrieve and communicate information from and to various sources. Additionally, this increased communication can improve business efficiency, especially in terms of smaller firms. Oft en situated in rural areas, these smaller firms in sub-Saharan Africa have limited supply options. With improved, efficient communication, they can better manage their supply chains, engage in new activities, and even streamline production processes. This is pertinent in terms of enriched productivity, stimulating both firm and economic growth in the long-run. By extension of this productivity facet, and the growth of mobile devices, there is a higher demandShow MoreRelatedEssay about Annotated Bibliography on Information Technology768 Words   |  4 PagesAnnotated Bibliography on Information Technology Mobile Security in the Future Adesina, A. How themes are still relevant today free essay sample

Goodmorning Ladies and Gentlemen, today I am here to talk to you about how Romeo and Juliet is relevant today. More specifically how the theme of love displayed is relevant in modern society. Love, its everywhere. Its human nature to love and be loved. Whether its the 1800s or the year 3013 love will never go out of fashion. The first notion of love in the play is when Romeo is infatuated with Rosaline. His love for her is quick, childish and unrequited. Shakespeare presents Romeo as merely being in love with the idea of being in love. Rosaline does not return the love he has for her, and Romeo grieves over this. An example of this is in Act 1 Scene 1 when Romeo says Well, in that hit you miss, shell not be hit, With cupids arrow, she hath Dians wit We have all been in that situation where you have a crush on someone and they dont like you back. We will write a custom essay sample on How themes are still relevant today or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The audience and people in modern society can really relate to this idea and theme. Love at first sight. Shakespeare has conveyed this idea in Act 1 Scene 5 when Romeo sneaks into capulets party even though there familes are enemies, once he is there he lays eyes on Juliet and says did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For i neer saw true beauty till this night Romeo was overwhelmed with desire and passion for Juliet. He realised his feelings were shallow and trivial. For Romeo and Juliet it was love at first sight. This still happens in todays society, many people relate to this and dream about such a thing happening to them. People today go to nightclubs and parties and fall in love just like Romeo and Juliet. Love at first sight is a timeless idea that is relevant in todays society. In Romeo and Juliet shakespeare perfectly captures what it is like to be young and in love. Its a feeling that anyone can somehow relate too. The rush of being in love and the desire to make it last forever is displayed in Act 2 Scene 2 when Juliet says my bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep, The more I give to thee, the more I have, For both are infinite Although the love they both have for each other is beautiful and passionate, it is because of this love that they both commit suicide. Besides the obvious romantic love between Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare also explores another kind of love. The love between Juliet and the Nurse. Juliet and the Nurse share a very close bond. Juliet sees the nurse as a confidant, friend and a mother figure. The Nurse just wants to protect Juliet and see her happy. This can be seen in Act 3 Scene 5 when she tries to stand up to Lord Capulet when he is yelling at Juliet. You are to blame, my lord,to rate her so. Although the audience in the modern society may be able to relate to this relationship on some level, it isnt really relevent in modern society. Today it is very abnormal for a 13 year old girl to still be under such constant care by someone other than her parents. Womens rights have dramatically changed since the elizabethan time period. In conclusion although some ideas are not relevent today, the theme of love and the meaning behind the play are still relevant in modern society. Teenagers will always be falling in love, teenagers will always think there parents dont understand them and unfortunatly suicide will still be committed by some. Thankyou.

There are many contrasting views of this sacred sacrament that Christians call Marriage. In the religion of Catholics, marriage is a sacred bonding of the mind, body and soul. As marriage completely changes people’s lives â€Å"for better or for worse† every day, Tess’s ceremony affected her actions and her ability to progress as a young woman. The book is divided into seven phases, each of which tells a concise and particular story within the larger story of Tess's life and each accomplishes specific goals in moving Tess from her simple, youthful life in the country to her tragic early death. To an extent, this makes the characters in Tess seem one-dimensional. Free Essays on Tess Of The D'Urbervilles Free Essays on Tess Of The D'Urbervilles In Phase five of Tess of the D’Urbervilles I feel that Tess really grew as a person. In this chapter she grew up and took responsibility for things that have happened and that will happen. She knows that everything that has happened isn’t totally her fault but, she needed to own up to her part in those events. In this phase she understands the estrangement from her husband and because of that she doesn’t want to go to his family to ask for more money. At the same time her family needs money to fix their roof that has started to leak and she is devoted to them so she sends them the rest of her money. About the same time that she has to give all her money to her family she gets a letter from her friend Marian telling her of work on a farm. She now knows what she has to do and that is go out and get a job to support herself. On her way to the farm she looks for work at other diaries so she doesn’t have to face her past but, she has to face it anyway when the man that Angel hit on Christmas Eve shows up. He again says that he made no mistake who she is and that she should apologize to that other man for deceiving him. This really sends her back to her past and she goes running into the woods to hide from the man and her past. After she gets to the dairy though she gets to talking to Marian and she tells her not to refer to her as Mrs.Clare but just plain Tess. This is because she doesn’t want to be sent back to everything she has been through Tess really wants to move on. I think that so far out of all the phase in this book that I’ve read this is my favorite. I feel this way because of the fact that I think Tess has really truly grown and learned something important life lessons here. I think that the growth from this phase will make the next even better.... HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMNENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMNENT - Essay Example tice that organisations can not operate under one of the two above in absolute terms and a common ground should be struck to realise the best results and harmony. This is the management approach that perceives that the organisation is a family-like setting and that the whole system is harmonious and integrated. In this approach the proponents are against the formation of trade unions or any activity that is taken to be disruptive (Charles & Simhala 1998). Therefore, all employees are required to be loyal to the organisation and that their interests and purpose need to be shared by all. In this respect harmony in doing ones duties is of huge importance as it is perceived to lead to the overall success of the organisation. The management takes all the employees and itself as a people working towards a common cause for the betterment of the organisation. In other words the entire workforce is supposed to work as a team and any objective that deviates and sounds to be conflicting is deemed negative or dysfunctional. In this approach the management is required to provide an environment that enhances communication between itself and the employees a nd among the employees themselves. Proper communication reduces chances of conflicts as the commonality of interest shall be achieved (Sonia 2000). This approach has a number of pros that make it popular especially in the human resource sector of the United States. First is that the system or approach encourages harmony and builds on consensus. This as described in its definition above takes the core and therefore the foremost reason behind its adoption (Ackers 2008). Harmony and consensus are achieved since the employees and the management are made to work together in achieving the organisational goals and objectives. As also highlighted earlier the improved communication among the various parties enhances good relations that endeavour to promote peaceful coexistence. Secondly is that the approach makes the employees become

Judas Priest and Money Essay Example for Free

Judas Priest and Money Essay Money, money, and money; all people talk about this crucial thing as if money is the goal of their life. Many people say that we cannot live without money. They say so because almost all the things they need and they want can be gained if only they have money, even for an occupation. Since this reason, people’s thought seems to be changed; money is regarded as the determiner of their life and the worst, as the God. But for me, money is not everything although money can buy many things that I want. Money, in my opinion, is only a little piece of our life. We are born not only for getting money. There are the other things that much more important than it. It is badly affect your life when you think that money is everything. Money becomes a reason of the crime happen today. Deception, murder, robbery are all because of it. You will think about yourself, without caring about another people’s life. Your eyes will be blinded; you will not recognize which one is enemy, friend or family. As the servant adores his Lord, people will do anything for money. They work all the day for the sake of getting money. If they failed to get much money by doing low salary-fine job, they will run to the worse-dirty job in which they can get much money. For many people who live in poverty, financial must be the prominent problem they have to face. And when they are being asked â€Å"do you want much money?† Their answer must be completely â€Å"yes†. Then they will do anything-whether it is good or bad- to get it. Next, I tell you another thing why I can say that money is not the most important thing in our life. That is you will be nothing with all of your money if you live alone-without your family, your friend or the other people- in this world. Whom will you tell that you have a lot of money? Who will feel envy to you when you have a lot of money? Can you talk with your money when everyone leaves you alone? Can you make a love with your money? All of those questions strengthen my opinion that money is not everything. Money cannot help you to do anything without people around you. The last but not the least, money is not a guarantee to get happiness. The first, money cannot buy health. You will not be happy having a lot of money but you always suffer from some diseases. In the other word, you cannot enjoy it when you are sick. Second, having a lot of money, sometimes make us feel restless; we afraid of losing our wealth. Afraid it will be  stolen by the other people. Worrying about it makes us live in fear; we do not live in happiness. Next, when you feel that you are the winner because you have got much money and so proud of it, then you turn to be very arrogant. Sooner or later, people around you will leave you one by one; they are sick of you who turn to be very arrogant. At the first time you may do not care about them, but after all, you will be lonely. Are you happy having much money without anyone lives with you? Of course the answer is NO!! In short, money is not the most important thing in our life. There are many other things that much more important than it. It cannot give a guarantee for happiness. Without being healthy, money is just a paper with its number. Without people who give you affection, money is just a thin rectangle thing to fill our wallet up. Money may help you to get what you need and you want, but it is not the determiner of your life, it is not your God. You can work as hard as you can, but keep your body healthy, and do not forget your family, your friend and others who care of you. Those are much more important than money itself.

Falls Of Miltons Eve And Doctor Faustus Religion Essay

Falls Of Miltons Eve And Doctor Faustus Religion Essay In this essay I am going to be comparing the falls of Eve in John Miltons Paradise Lost, first published in 1667 and Doctor Faustus in Christopher Marlowes The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, first published in 1604 The notion of the Fall of man originates in the Bible where it is recorded in the book of Genesis. It has been interpreted both literally, as a description of historical events and symbolically as a spiritual truth. The Fall refers to the transition of the first created humans, Adam and Eve from their original state of perfection, to a state of guilt and disobedience to God. The notion of Adam and Eves perfection comes from Genesis 1:31 where we are told that God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. This notion was also reinforced by St. Augustine, who believed that Mans nature indeed, was created at first faultless and without any sin. In Genesis 2:16-17, God forbids Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil: And the Lord  God commanded the man, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;  but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.' This is essentially the beginning of the series of events that lead to the Fall, because it is shortly after this that Eve is deceived by the serpent into eating from that tree, and shares it with Adam. We are told that the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made (Gen 3:1) and later, in the book of Revelations, we are led to believe that the serpent was in fact Satan in disguise: The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan. (Rev 12:9) Adam and Eve are consequently banished from the Garden of Eden by God and as punishment for their sin, sent to live on Earth. They are also banned from eating from the Tree of Life again, which is how Christians believe death entered the world. This is known as the Fall of Man. The Biblical story of Adam and Eve forms the basis for Miltons Paradise Lost, and he too seems to adopt the Augustinian view that Adam and Eve are two perfect and fully developed humans. This is shown when: Adam soon repealed The doubts that in his heart arose: and now Led on, yet sinless Unlike the Biblical Adam and Eve however, Milton gives us the impression that Eve is inferior to Adam since Adam was created to mirror Gods divine authority and Eve was created merely to satisfy Adams desire for a companion. Throughout the poem we realise that Eve never experiences God directly; Adam experiences God and Eve experiences Adam, who appears to act as an intermediary between her and God: For contemplation hee and valour formd,   For softness shee and sweet attractive Grace,   Hee for God only, shee for God in him. It is this sense of divine hierarchy that seems to make Eve more susceptible to Satans temptation, because during the series of events which contribute towards the eventual Fall, Satan plays on Eves desire for autonomy and a connection to the universe outside of Adams shadow. The sequence of event leading to Eves fall begins when she is asleep one night and Satan attempts to plant his tempting thoughts in her mind. Satans effect is reflected in her dream when an angel tempts her to eat from the Tree of Knowledge: Taste this, and be henceforth among the Gods   Thy self a Goddess, not to Earth confind. This plays on Eves desire to achieve a direct relationship with God. The second significant factor is her determination to spend time alone on the fateful day; she wakes up in an independent mood and insists that her and Adam attend to the garden separately, despite Adams attempts at dissuading her. It is at this point, when she is pleased with herself for achieving some autonomy that she comes across the serpent. In order to be successful in leading Eve astray, the serpent attempts to eliminate her fear of disobeying God. He begins by making her doubt the existence of death and evil: Those rigid threats of Death; ye shall not Die:   How should ye? by the Fruit? it gives you Life   To Knowledge? By the Threatner, look on mee,   Mee who have touchd and tasted, yet both live,   And life more perfet have attaind then Fate   Meant mee, by ventring higher then my Lot. The serpent then continues to try and make her doubt God himself by suggesting that God has only forbidden her to eat from the Tree of Knowledge so as to keep her ignorant, rather than becoming powerful and knowledgeable: Of good, how just? of evil, if what is evil   Be real, why not known, since easier shunnd?   God therefore cannot hurt ye, and be just;   Not just, not God; not feard then, nor obeid:   Your feare it self of Death removes the feare.   Why then was this forbid? Why but to awe,   Why but to keep ye low and ignorant,   His worshippers; he knows that in the day   Ye Eate thereof, your Eyes that seem so cleere,   Yet are but dim, shall perfetly be then   Opnd and cleerd, and ye shall be as Gods,   Knowing both Good and Evil as they know. Here Satan is playing on Eves perception of the divine hierarchy and her feelings of inferiority to both Adam and God, by offering her an opportunity to do what she believes will lead to a direct relationship with God. It is at this point that we begin to see Eves final error as intellectual rather than moral. In the moment before she eats from the tree, she pauses and thinks. She still allows her reason to guide her, but Satans deception of her mind misinforms her will. Her reasoning is quite sound, however it is based on the belief that the serpent is telling the truth. This, one of the main premises in her decision, is in fact false. After eating from the tree of knowledge, her nature and attitude towards her relationship towards Adam have been changed by sin. Having imagined an existence outside of Adams perception during her conversation with the serpent, she now finds herself consumed with a selfish desire to share her fate with Adam, because she can no longer conceive of separation from him.

A Technical Essay on the Composition Techniques used in Sibelius Symphony 2 essays

A Technical Essay on the Composition Techniques used in Sibelius Symphony 2 essays The second symphony written by composer Jean Sibelius {1865-1957} is one of the best examples in classical music of advanced compositional techniques such as melodic variation, tonal transitions, imitation, and suspension. Written in basic four-movement form (Allegretto, Tempo Andante/ma rubato, Vivacissimo, and Finale), Symphony #2 provides the listener with a fluidity of motion, which constantly engages the ear. The first movement in Sibelius Symphony #2 is written in the key of D major, uses A-B-A form, sets the tonal foundation for the rest of the symphony by incorporating sub-dominant and dominant chord progressions, and demonstrates ingenious suspension and transition techniques. The most noticeable and repeated element of Allegretto is the dominant and sub-dominant chord progression of I (tonic), IV (sub-dominant), V (dominant). First used by all strings in the opening measures of the movement, this progression is continually being played by the low strings (Cellos and Basses). Sibelius writes this movement in A-B-A form so of course each section of this movement has certain characteristics. The first section of the movement (A) opens with the strings playing an expressive style known as Coll`e while stating I, IV, V, I. The oboe plays the melodic material throughout this section, with the flute playing a legato accompaniment line. Also characteristic of section A is the use of 4s to carry the melodic line (horns, oboe, flute, and clarinet). The transition from section A to section B, and the transition from Major to Minor, is made by the clarinet. In section B the melodic line is at first carried by the flute with the oboe and/or clarinet, then the strings take over until a dramatic pause at measure . After the 2 Â ½ beats of rest the strings come back once again with a dominant chord (V). The melody is then tossed around between the woodwinds and strings until after a brief cut-time section t...

Network Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Network Security - Essay Example Cyber security made the greatest move on the discovery of Stuxnet, computer software, which is believed to be the first warfare weapon and a computer virus that attacks and destroys industrial computer programs. Over the past years there has been a great debate about the Stuxnet virus. This computer worm was first used to wipe sixty percent of Iran’s computer network and programs. The Stuxnet attack has far-reaching policy implications and cyber-security, since it demonstrates that states are vulnerable to crippling cyber actions from other states. The source and the exact purpose of the virus are not well known to the international community. The software was basically designed to target industrial equipment. It is an IT discovery which attacks programs and destroys information aimed for an attack. Since the discovery of the software, different opinions regarding its application have been forwarded by many computer experts among other members of the public. Views against the device have been raised while other individuals considered it a security device that can be used to improve security in a nation (Reveron, 2012). An observation on this device portray that there is a difference in the style of coding used in the software that initially affected the targeted states and the software that deploys once the virus has penetrated the state’s defenses. The device has therefore been believed to have been a collaborative effort between its two developers, the United States and Israel. According to other experts in various defense departments, the highly complex computer software was the first of its kind. It is said to have been written to specifically target critical mission control systems that run a specific combination of software and hardware. Many experts believe that the kind of research coordinating and planning required to undertake this specific kind of multi-stage attack on an industrial control system is most likely

Identifying Cash Flow problems and planning for solutions Assignment

Identifying Cash Flow problems and planning for solutions - Assignment Example Of the total sales of $208,000 in January, $20,800 was cash sales, and another $20,280, net of commission was from credit card sales, making a total of $41,080 collectible in the month of sales, namely January. Of the remaining $166,400, $55,470 is collectible in each of the following three months, namely February, March and April. Thus the total collections for the month of April against the sales of $208,000 are only $41,470. The expenses during the month of January are $187,070, of which $103,740 is against variable costs and $83,330 are fixed costs. Consequently, there is a shortfall of $145,990 in the month of January. Similarly, there are shortfalls in the cash flows for the months of February and March to the tune of $106,490 and $46,530 respectively. The cash flow turns positive from April onwards showing that this is a temporary problem, as the cash collections from previous months will compensate for the delays in the subsequent months. However, such situations can recur in future if there is a sudden growth or dip in sales during a particular period. It is obvious, from the above analysis, that the problem arises because of the delay in cash collections. There are several approaches that can be used to tackle this problem. Some of the possible measures that can be taken include taking deposits, offering discounts for prompt payments, and factoring receivables (Katz & Green, 2009, p. 464). In the case of Bulltuff, the most appropriate among these seems to be to offer a discount for early payment. Taking deposits may not be a viable alternative as all customers (dealers) may not agree to it. It cannot be implemented selectively on only a few willing customers. Factoring receivables is likely to be costly. Consequently, offering discounts for early payments appears to be the most workable solution. The company could also simultaneously consider steps to delay the cash outflows

Comparing the Last Song and Dear John Essay Example for Free

Comparing the Last Song and Dear John Essay Comparing Movies The last 2 movies I saw were The Last Song and Dear John. Considering both of these movies are sappy Nicholas Sparks books, they have a ton of similarities. They also have some differences. I saw both of these movies more than 4 months ago so I hope I can even remember enough to compare them. One similarity is about 2 people that meet in a beach setting. In The Last Song, Ronnie, who is played by Miley Cyrus and is the main character, is shipped to her fathers house in Tybee Beach, Georgia, with her mothers hopes of her losing her bad attitude due to her arents rough divorce. While she is staying there, she meets a boy named Will who she tries to repel, but she ends up falling for him. In Dear John, which is also set in North Carolina, John, who is played by Channing Tatum, is visiting his father before he goes off to the army and Savannah, who is played by Amanda Seyfried, is going to school in North Carolina spends a month in Wilmington to built a house for Habitat for Humanity. These two also meet on the beach and fall in love. Another similarity is that death happens in both of these plots. In The Last Song, Ronnies dad had been aced with a battle with cancer and in the end of the story, he lost it. Leaving behind an ex wife, a changed-for-the-better daughter, and a young, very sensitive son. In Dear John, Johns dad had been suffering from having many heart attacks and eventually died. One last similarity is how the couples in both movies fall in love over a short period of time. In The Last Song, Ronnie tries to resist Will but she falls for him anyway over about a 2 week period. In Dear John, Savannah and John meet when Savannahs purse falls into the water and John goes to retrieve it. There were sparks there from the start. They also fell in love over a 2 week period. One of the most famous lines in that movie is said by Savannah and sounds like, Two weeks together, thats all it took. Two weeks for me to fall for you. There are also many differences in these movies. One, is that in The Last Song, Ronnie and Will end up together but in Dear John, Savannah marries a man who is dying and John sells his fathers prized coin collection to get money for his treatment but Savannah still loves John as much as she did. Another difference is in Dear John, the guy in the relationship goes away and leaves the girl. That doesnt happen in The Last Song ecause Will stays around and continues to date Ronnie. One last difference between these two movies is that the girls in both plots feel completely different towards the guys in the beginning. In Dear John, it was basically love at first sight. Savannah was attracted to John from the start. In The Last Song, Ronnie didnt like Will and tried to stay away from him. Both of these movies were based on books written by the same author so it was rather easy to find similarities. The plots of these movies are different but also have some of the same aspects. Drugs In The Urban Community Essay -- Descriptive Drugs Gangs

The real America is filled with abandoned houses, prostitution, and citizens that have no hope on life. How can this lifestyle become a normal living condition? Some say there is no chance on restoring the communities that were destroyed from drugs. Is our government aware of the hardship and poverty while they send troops to war? The infestation of drugs overtaking communities results in corruption in neighborhoods, destroying families, weakening the school system and increasing the crime and violence rate. The usage of drugs in major cities, and certain urban areas have transformed them to become an eye sorer. The type of place where unfamiliar faces will be scared to drive through at night. The ghetto is filthy and nasty looking; drugs have caused the used to be new, to look like a complete city that needs to be rehabbed. Some say the ghetto is a beautiful place and there is nothing wrong with it, certainly you would have to live there to feel that way. Recently real estate tycoons have made a fortune on rehabilitating houses. So how do drugs make our neighborhoods look so bad? â€Å"When it comes to drugs, think of it as real estate. Location is very important, just like your property value goes up and down, so does the drug market† (Local dealer 1, 2008). Local dealers compete in price and produc t, drug houses are being set on fire to force users to purchase from the arsonist that funded the fire. Once these houses have been burnt, that puts the house out of business until they move to another location and establishes their clients; I guess it’s like a store. Most big time drug dealers have more than one drug house; the more houses the more money. ... ...must purchase them from someone more successful than them, and to take their position they must kill them, and keeping the money and drugs from the transaction. This is how some dealers become heartless, doing whatever it takes to make the money, and take over the streets where the money is. It is a shame that people have been choosing this lifestyle, some even forced into this vicious cycle. Even, I have experience the effect of drugs in my city that I was born in, have you? Power Struggles and the Strong Woman

Katherine Hui RAYMOND WATERS CWL320 30 November 2011 POWER STRUGGLES AND THE STRONG WOMAN â€Å"Morning Glory†, directed by Roger Mitchell, is a romantic comedy and a reification of morning television. It is heavily coated in a formula base plot – the female protagonist is faced with obstacles in which she must overcome to prove her worth to those who have doubted her wrong; while simultaneously balancing her love interest. One of the most prominent archetypes in comedy is the strong woman archetype. The strong woman plays an outstanding role portraying power struggles, especially in the workplace.Becky Fuller, 28, is a high-energy and wide-eyed assistant producer. She quickly becomes a likable character in which the audience cannot help but root for. Through her struggles with pursuing her dreams of becoming an executive producer at the Today Show, Becky finds herself hired to revitalize a morning show in turmoil. Throughout the movie she experiences struggles with her self, her network, and the male alazon – Mike Pomeroy, a former news anchor acclaimed for his experience in covering â€Å"real† news. There is a parallel growth between all the characters in the movie as well as the morning show itself. The movie begins with a date, visually framing Becky’s obvious social ineptness and her overt dedication to work. Because of her job in early morning news, the audience sees her on a â€Å"3p. m. dinner† date with a marketing executive, whose job adds into the irony of the duo. Becky is chained to her phone and unable to talk about anything other than her work. She stumbles over her words and acts as if she were still a pubescent teenager on her first date. The marketing executive immediately realizes her awkwardness and incapacity to remove herself from her job and quickly asks for the check. Here the audience sympathizes for Becky, seeing her struggle in trying to fulfill one of life’s basic needs: companionship. T he date is followed by a montage of her daily routine in which we see Becky in her comfort zone; in complete control of what she is passionate about: work. The audience sees the contrast between her dedication with work and struggles ith men; and is able to feel a sense of admiration and respect for the character. Although she lacks in being able to make social connections she makes up for in her devotion to her work. Becky is a highly dedicated to her job at Good Morning New Jersey. She is the â€Å"first one in, last one out and knows a shitload more about news than someone’s whose daddy paid them to smoke bongs and talk semiotics at Harvard. † Becky is tipped off that she would be promoted to executive producer, something that she has pursued since she was 18.Instead she is laid off and expectantly replaced by a male who has more experience with an education from Harvard. This is a constant struggle in society today; women are underrated and easily replaced in the w ork place. The strong women archetype serves to prove society wrong through the comic spirit theme. Although Becky is consistently faced with others doubt in her – including her own mother – she perseveres through the negativity as the strong woman and is given the opportunity as an executive producer on Daybreak, a â€Å"perpetually fourth rated morning show† at IBS.On Becky’s first day she is already confronted with multiple complications: her boss’s lack of faith, the show’s low morale, and its semi-talented staff. Quickly she proves that she posses the type of assertiveness and ardent attitude that Daybreak desperately needs, making the executive decision to fire a long running co-anchor Paul McVee, the epitome of the conceitedness and one of the main reasons for the show’s low morale. Becky again faces another challenge: finding the perfect replacement. Daybreak’s low budget forces Becky to find an unconventional way to hi re a new anchor.Through her wit and ability to think on her feet she finds a loophole in one of IBS’s contracted and retired news anchors. Mike Pomeroy, the braggart male, is a world-renowned and respected television journalist. His opinion of morning television is far from low and is highly reluctant in having to co-anchor Daybreak, finally he is forced to accept the position due to his six million dollar contract with IBS. Pomeroy refuses to cover anything â€Å"un-newsworthy† and becomes a constant struggle in Becky’s effort to improve the show.Pomeroy disregards all of Becky’s requests, even getting drunk before his first day at work, further conveying his role as the braggart male. Becky withstands anything that Pomeroy throws at her, paralleling her strength to his experience. Pomeroy compares morning entertainment to a worthless sugary â€Å"donut†, in which Becky counters by comparing hard news to a boring â€Å"bran muffin. † Both c haracters finally come to reconciliation when they collaborate on their first breaking news story, covering the live arrest of New Jersey’s governor on charges of racketeering.Becky is elated and compares their breakthrough to a â€Å"bran donut. † She is faced with yet another challenge: improving Daybreaks ratings or having to face cancellation. One challenge that television faces today is the quality of entertainment. Often time’s ratings are based on controversy and popular culture and the dumb-ing down of information to appease the commercial audience. Becky fully understands what viewers want and overlooks this issue, completely devoting herself into doing absolutely anything to increase ratings.Through the strong woman archetype Becky shows that she has a clear vision and proves to her co-workers that she has a concrete strategy and ability to meet the audiences needs. Her dedication rally’s morale and like Lysistrata she is able to persuade her cr ew to be just as committed as she is. Becky performs miracles, introducing new segments and changing everything from the weather broadcast to their interviews. This progression is farced paced, paralleling the show’s increasing success. As Daybreak’s ratings go up they’re able to gain access to more famous celebrities, which in turn increases ratings even more. The show’s breaking point comes with Becky’s and Pomeroy’s â€Å"bran donut,† signifying her achievement at Daybreak and her ability to overcome the tribulations of the male alazon through her strong will and perseverance. Throughout the plot Becky becomes romantically involved with Adam Bennett, another producer at IBS. Although â€Å"Morning Glory† is a romantic comedy, it touches lightly on Becky’s relationship with Adam, focusing more on her exchanges with Pomeroy.Expectantly, Becky struggles with removing herself from work while trying to build a relationship with her love interest. Her dedication to work is her Achilles’ heal as well as her inimitable strength. Adam is able to overlook her awkwardness, even to the point adoration. The show’s successes and downfalls parallel with Becky’s growth in her ability to sustain a relationship. Towards the end of the movie, like with all romantic comedies, she is finally able to overlook her obsessions and succeed in overcoming her disability to make a romantic connection. The comic spirit seeks to exhibit strength in those who deserve a chance to exhibit greatness; those who are overlooked by society’s standards. In â€Å"Morning Glory,† Becky’ Fuller’s enduring strength, forceful determination, and self-belief transcends beyond any high profiled work experience or degree from Harvard. Daybreak’s growth parallels with Becky’s relationship with Mike Pomeroy as well the crew’s morale. Becky is a prime example of the strong woman archetype and she triumphs over her inner struggles as well as struggles with the higher forces of society.

Jack Greenberg, Inc.

Family owned business is a business that is owned by one family, most of the shareholders are from the same family. One of the major problems in this type of business is a conflict in interests among the family’s member. The auditor should be careful and observe the type of the relationship among the family’s member. There should be a written agreement to specify rights, duties, and obligations for each member, the auditor should read those documents for further information. One issue that faced the auditor is to understand the attitude of each member, the risk of manipulating facts can be existed due to the close relationship. In the case of Jack Greenberg, the son has manipulated the numbers in the record for his father’s sake and no one would be able to prevent him since he is one of the owners. The possibility of hiding facts is high in this kind of business because of the close relationship among the family’s member.I believe the family owned business demands more effort from the auditor to check and discover misstatements. 2. For the prepaid inventory I would recommend that the auditor should focus on the following objectives; existing, occurrence, valuation and allocation, completeness, and right and obligation. Prepaid items represent a complete listing of the company’s costs that are allocable to future periods and that can reasonably be expected to be realized through future operations. As for the merchandise, the auditor should physically observe the inventory to verify the amount recorded, the most important part of the observation of inventory is to determine whether the physical count is being taken in accordance with the client’s instructions. The audit objective related to merchandise are; * Existence: Inventory as recorded on tags exists. * Completeness: Existing inventory is counted and tagged. * Accuracy: Inventory is counted accurately. * Realizable value: Obsolete and unusable inventory items are excl uded or noted. Rights: The client has rights to inventory recorded on tags. * Classification: Inventory is classified correctly on the tags. * Cutoff: Transactions are recorded in the proper period. 3. Internal evidence is created, used, and retained within the client’s organization and without the help of outside parties for example; sales invoices duplicate copy, employees’ time reports, inventory reports, and purchase requisitions. On the other hand, external evidence originates outside the client’s organization for example; bank statement. This type of documents generally prepared in the ordinary course of business activities and form part of its records whether of accounting or non-accounting nature. Sometimes obtained directly from source such as bank, debtors, and creditors confirmations. External evidence and the internally generated evidence circulated externally are more reliable than the internal evidence. 4. Walkthrough is simply the act of tracing a transaction through organizational records and procedures, a commonsense approach to learning how a process works. The purpose of walkthrough procedure is to evaluate the reliability of the client's accounting system. The auditor looks at the supporting documentation for a transaction from its starting point and then proceeds to examine the accounting system steps thereafter until ultimate disposition of the item. The walk-through examination is one of the tests that is important for the auditor to obtain an understanding of the client’s business. The U. S.Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) has drawn attention to a fundamental audit procedures, one that is so common that auditors may take it for granted is the walkthrough procedure. Most auditors traditionally have viewed walkthroughs as the procedure of choice when attempting to develop an understanding of key processes and internal controls of a client. Now, walkthroughs are required when certifying financial reporting controls under Section 404 of the U. S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. As it relates to Audit Standard No. from the PCAOB, the standard includes a requirement that the auditor must perform a walkthrough for each of the company’s significant processes. 5. I would highly recommend that the auditor should extend the scope of substantive test and increase the sample size in order to discover other misstatements that existed. The auditor also could trace documents to testify whether the inventory has been listed accurately. Analytical procedure and test of detail as part of substantive test to find the relationship between the inventory account and other accounts in the financial statements.Cut off test with physical observation to the inventory would help to discover fraud and any misstatement in the inventory account. In addition, the auditor may use confirmation to confirm amount listed in the record with third parties. 6. I think the audit firm responsibility is to info rm the client that there are weaknesses in their current internal control however the audit firm does not have the right to force the client to do some action regarding those deficiencies. The auditor should try to persuade the client and reveal the risks of having such a weak internal control system. In case the client did not cooperate with the auditor, the auditor should resign from performing audit services to the client; he or she should disclose that decision. The general Accepted Auditing Standards -AU 150 paragraph 2- require the auditor to maintain independence as a general rule, the auditor must also exercise due professional care in the performance of the audit and the preparation of the report therefore, in order to maintain the auditor independence, the auditor should have his or her own voice and not just follow the client’s rule.

buy custom Julia Butterfly Hill essay

buy custom Julia Butterfly Hill essay Today people are living in a jet-age, in a world of high tech and industry where most of their deeds are dictated by financial profit and material needs of a comfortable life. Being obsessed by the desire of self-enrichment, people do not take into account the place they live in, and often forget that their actions can cause harm to the world around them. That is why the work that nature protection organizations and their volunteers do play a significant role in preserving the nature from hasty steps of mankind. Speaking about the environment protection, there are many people, unfortunately mostly anonymous, who did a lot to attract the attention of the authorities to this problem, but there is one person who remains well known till today. Her name is Julia Butterfly Hill and she is famous for her two-year sit in a huge Redwood tree which she called Luna. Back then in the late 90s, it was a sensational case. It was her way of protest against cutting this tree down by the local lumber company, and Julia succeeded. By her in-tree sitting, she made everyone pay attention to the problem bigger than just cutting down one particular tree. Being started with a small work, she grew into wide activities focused not only on saving and preserving the woods all around the United States or organizing the actions of protest, bu also on founding various non-profit nature-conservation organizations as Circle of Life Foundation. In my opinion, Julia Hills tree sit is a remarkable feat of a person not indifferent to what happens in the world around her. It was an example of how one ordinary person, being inspired by the lofty idea, could do something extraordinary. Someone may say that such actions of people who care is just a spectacular move, designed to attract attention to them. However, in the case of Julia, it was probably the only way to attract public attention to the issue raised by her. Julias decision to climb a tree is a manifestation of the strong will and determination to reach the goal. During her sit, Julia weathered cold rains as well as El Nino hurricane winds and attacks of both angry loggers and security guards. Few people are ready to make something like this in order to achieve their goal of voluntary help to a single tree, while undergoing much inconvenience and sacrificing their own comfort and safety. In her speech at the Mount Mercy University Chapel, Julia Hill mentioned that everyone has his or her symbolic tree to sit in. If take her words literally, I think it means that each person can find a tree that is related to him or her, or symbolizes some significant features of a persons character. If so, I think that my tree is a maple. For me, it is a symbol of strength and persistence as maples can grow in a rather cold climate and the tree itself looks steady and strong. Also it symbolizes friendliness and joy by its vast branches and the way sun rays flicker between the leaves. On the other hand, Julias words can have the other side, meaning that the symbolic tree is the goal of a persons life. When she says that each of us has to find his or her own tree to sit in, it means that we have to figure out what the main goal of our life is and stick to it. People have to devote their lives to something that is truly important to them instead of being important to somebody else. When such goal is found and one feels exhilarated by reaching it, the way to the top is like a tree with lots of branches. On the way one steps from one opportunity to another as if climbing on branches, from one challenge to another, changing himself and the world around for good. This tree is what I am still looking for because it is not easy sometimes to figure out what is really significant in life. I am sure that there is no need to hurry. Life will show the way to my tree when time comes, and what I am doing now is just exploring the magnificent forest of chances and challenges of life. Buy custom Julia "Butterfly" Hill essay

Constructing a Deductive Theory

Constructing a Deductive Theory There are two approaches to constructing a theory: deductive theory construction and inductive theory construction. Deductive theory construction takes place during deductive reasoning in the hypothesis-testing phase of research. Process The process of developing a deductive theory is not always as simple and straightforward as the following; however, the process generally involves the following steps: Specify the topic.Specify the range of phenomena your theory addresses. Will it apply to all of human social life, only U.S. citizens, only middle-class Hispanics, or what?Identify and specify your major concepts and variables.Find out what is known about the relationships among those variables.Reason logically from those relationships to the specific topic you are studying. Pick a Topic of Interest The first step in constructing a deductive theory is picking a topic that interests you. It can be very broad or very specific but should be something that you are trying to understand or explain. Then, identify what the range of phenomena is that you are examining. Are you looking at human social life across the globe, only women in the United States, only poor, sick children in Haiti, etc? Take Inventory   The next step is to take inventory of what is already known about that topic or what is thought about it. This includes learning what other scholars have said about it as well as writing down your own observations and ideas. This is the point in the research process where you will likely spend a great deal of time in the library reading scholarly literature on the topic and devising a literature review. During this process, you will likely notice patterns discovered by prior scholars. For example, if you are looking at views on abortion, religious and political factors will stand out as important predictors in many of the previous studies you come across. Next Steps After you’ve examined the previous research conducted on your topic, you are ready to construct your own theory. What is it that you believe you will find during your research? Once you develop your theories and hypotheses, it is time to test them in the data collection and analysis phase of your research. References Babbie, E. (2001).
